The Morning After Pill (Emergency Contraception) – Montgomery & Wetumpka, AL
At First Choice Women’s Medical Center, we understand that unprotected sex or contraceptive mishaps can be stressful. While we do not provide the Morning After Pill (emergency contraception), we are committed to providing accurate, supportive information so you can make informed decisions.
What is the Morning After Pill?
The Morning After Pill, also known as emergency contraception (EC), is a safe and temporary method to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Common situations include:
- Condoms breaking or slipping
- Missed birth control pills
- Unprotected sexual intercourse
Emergency contraception is most effective when taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours, though some options may work up to 5 days after.
Types of Emergency Contraception
There are different forms of EC available at pharmacies or through healthcare providers:
- Levonorgestrel pills (Plan B One-Step® or generics): Most effective within 72 hours.
- Ulipristal acetate (ella®): Prescription-only, effective up to 5 days.
- Copper IUD: Can be inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex and provides ongoing contraception.
Note: First Choice Women’s Medical Center does not provide these methods, but we encourage speaking with a licensed healthcare provider or pharmacist for access.
How It Works
Emergency contraception works primarily by delaying ovulation. It does not terminate an existing pregnancy and is not the same as the abortion pill.
Important Considerations
- EC does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Side effects may include nausea, fatigue, or temporary changes to your next period.
- If your period is more than a week late after taking EC, consider taking a pregnancy test.

Even if you do not take the Morning After Pill, First Choice Women’s Medical Center provides support for:
